Four-run innings decided the two softball games between Newton High’s Cardinals and the Class 4A No. 11 Norwalk Warriors on Tuesday. The teams split the Little Hawkeye Conference doubleheader at Newton Softball Field.
The Warriors had a four-run fourth in the opener to gain a 6-1 lead and won 6-3. The Cardinals, playing their final regular season games, used a four-run first to stake out a lead in the nightcap, winning 7-4.
In the victory, the Cardinals got a single and a triple from Maddison Thayer. She drove in three runs and scored twice.
Kallie VanKley recorded the pitching win, going 3 2/3 innings. She allowed three runs on one hit and four walks and had one strikeout. Peyton Maher threw the final 3 1/3 innings, giving up one run on three hits, two walks and two hit batters. She had three strikeouts.
Maher had two singles in the game. Chassidy Henwood and Makayla Johnson had a single apiece.
Maher took the loss in the circle for the Cardinals in the first game. She gave up eight hits, walked three, hit one batter and struck out six.
Lakin Jenkins had two singles. Thayer tripled and Mac Brown doubled. Maher had a base hit.
Newton finished the LHC season at 10-11.
The Cardinals (17-15) begin Class 4A Region 1 play at home Thursday. They host Bondurant-Farrar for a 7 p.m. game.
