No injuries were reported in a four-vehicle crash Tuesday afternoon on First Avenue West near the West End Sinclair gas station. The accident forced the Newton Police Department and Newton Fire Chief Jarrod Wellik to direct traffic away from the mass of cars that appeared to be heading westbound.

Julie Burr, assistant manager of West End Sinclair, was outside the gas station checking the gas pumps when she saw the accident occur. She said a gold Pontiac Sunfire was waiting to make a left-hand turn into the Newton gas station. Behind that vehicle was a burgundy Honda Accord.

"The red car just came out of the blue and — boom — ran right into them, which made the black car hit them," Burr claimed, referring to the red Kia Sportage 4x4 and black Chevy Malibu involved in the tail end of the crash. Motorists from all four vehicles filled out paperwork on the northern side of the street while crews assisted traffic flow.

It appeared both the Kia and Chevy vehicles sustained the most damage from the crash. The Chevy in particular received heavy damages to its driver’s side fender and headlight, the debris of which was scattered across the pavement. Wellik said crews used peat moss to soak up the leaking antifreeze from one of the vehicles.
