Colfax City Council approves firework ordinances

The Colfax city council held a special session June 18 to approve firework ordinances and the purchase of flags and flag poles for the public works shop.

Ordinance 631 and 632 were both enacted after the third reading was waived by the council members.

Ordinance 631 pertains to the notice of a fireworks violation and how citizens can address paying the citation from the violation. Citizens can pay the citation at city hall or, if the citizens wants to dispute the violation, they can contact the county courthouse in Newton.

The last section added to the ordinance shows that law enforcement personnel have the discretion of giving out the citation or not. Ordinance 632 deals with how the City of Colfax can fine people who aren’t using fireworks in the proper way during the appropriate times outlined by the city.

The change makes it so the fine can go to the owner or occupant of the property where the fireworks were seen or found. It makes it so that law enforcement doesn’t have to track down the person who lit the firework, insteadciting the homeowner.

The outline of the ordinance also set the amount for the fine at $100.

The last order of business that was handled at the meeting was the purchase of flags and flag poles for a total of $1,050 for the public works shop, which was approved unanimously.

Both ordinance 631 and 632 were passed by the council and approved on June 18 with Mayor Pro Tempore Poulter declaring them enacted.
