Long balls power C-M softball past host Saydel

DES MOINES — Rilee Slycord crushed a three-run home run in the first inning and Colbee Cunningham added a solo blast in the fifth during Colfax-Mingo’s softball team’s 7-5 win over Saydel on Tuesday night.

The Tigerhawks led 4-0 after two innings and then took a 7-2 lead to the seventh. Six of the first seven Eagle batters reached in the seventh but the game ended on a line out to center field.

Slycord hit her 10th home run of the season in the first to give C-M an early lead. Cunningham had an RBI double in the second to make it 4-0 and then she led off the fifth with her fourth homer of the year.

The Tigerhawks (17-4) scored two more runs against Saydel (10-11) in the fifth on RBI ground outs by Chelsea Russell and Madison Gilkison.

Cunningham finished 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs and two RBIs. She also got the win in the circle, allowing five earned runs on seven hits with six strikeouts and four walks.

Slycord had two hits, two runs and three RBIs, Kylie Doty had one hit, one walk and one run and Carley Underwood walked twice.

Colfax-Mingo has won six of its last seven games and hosts Class 1A No. 8 Lynnville-Sully at 6 p.m. on Wednesday in Colfax.
