No. 10 HLV too much for Tigerhawk baseball

COLFAX — Colfax-Mingo baseball coach Brian Warrick has no doubts about how good the HLV baseball team is. Him and his squad saw first hand on June 19 in a 10-2 loss.

Coming into the game, the Warriors only had one loss and were ranked 10th in Class 1A. Warrick was surprised at how well their South Iowa Cedar League opponent hit the ball.

“They showed up tonight and they just crushed the ball,” Warrick said. “They hit it to the gaps. This umpire liked the outside of the plate and they were excellent with outside pitches. Their right-handed hitters hit to right field and left-handers to left.”

The Warriors jumped on top of the Tigerhawks early in the first inning. Colfax-Mingo’s Brady Berkey started on the mound but found himself down five runs.

Trystin Ross was put in and stopped the bleeding, but not before a five-run first inning.

In the bottom of the first, Colfax-Mingo had bases loaded with no outs but only scored one run when Zach Steenhoek collected an RBI fielder’s choice.

The Warriors were able to get one more run in when Dean Shaull brought home a runner on a single past second base.

The Tigerhawks were able to get one runner on base in both the fourth and fifth inning, but couldn’t convert.

C-M’s Zarek Hill was walked to start the bottom of the sixth inning. Some smart and speedy base running by Hill on a hit by Steenhoek allowed him to score on a bad throw to third base.

Heading into the seventh inning, the Tigerhawks trailed 9-2.

After Ross replaced Berkey on the mound in the first inning, he went the rest of the way for the Tigerhawks. Wolf went all seven innings for HLV.
