Newton Municipal Band to plays pops concert Thursday

The Newton Municipal Band will present a “Pops” concert when it takes the stage at Fred Maytag Bowl for its second concert of the season.  Director Jim Beerends has chosen a variety of popular tunes, from Frank Sinatra and the Big Band Era, up through the years to Lady GaGa.

Throughout the evening, you will hear music from legends such as Stevie Wonder, The Beach Boys, and The Tijuana Brass.

The band is part of the Newton Parks and Recreation Department “Summer Concerts in the Park” series. The concert will begin at 7 p.m. in beautiful Maytag Park. Master of Ceremonies for the evening will be Fred Chabot. There are benches in front of the bowl, or attendees may bring lawn chairs and blankets.

People are expected to be dancing on the hillside during this energetic and high-powered concert.

Beginning with “The Star Spangled Banner,” concert goers will groove to “Symphonic Suite from Jurassic World,” “The Peanut Vendor,” “Lady Gaga Fugue,” “Tijuana Brass in Concert,” “Stevie Wonder in Concert,” “The Beach Boys Greatest Hits”, “Come Fly With Me” and “Guardians of the Galaxy.”
