Lynnville-Sully teams notch non-conference sweep of Trojans

SULLY — Lynnville-Sully’s baseball team finally pulled out a win in one of those close games. The Hawks have lost five games by three runs or less this season.

On Tuesday at home, the Hawks rallied to beat West Marshall 9-7. Lynnville-Sully’s baseball team is 4-10 for the season.

Also on Tuesday, the Class 1A 12th-ranked Lynnville-Sully softball team dispatched the visiting West Marshall squad, 8-5. The Hawk softball team has won seven of its last eight games to improve to 14-4.

In the baseball game, the Hawks trailed West Marshall 4-1 coming up to bat in the bottom of the third inning. Lynnville-Sully pushed across three to tie the game then put up two more runs in the fourth.

West Marshall came back to lead 7-6 with a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth. The Hawks rallied to score three runs, regaining the lead in the bottom of the sixth.

Kinnick McFarland started on the mound for the Hawks, going five innings. He allowed five runs on three hits and three walks with two strikeouts. Blaize Kuhlmann got the win with two innings of work, giving up two runs on one hit and two walks. He struck two out.

Slater Young hit a single and a double. Payton Van Wyk had two singles and Skyler Sanders singled.

Lynnville-Sully was up 4-0 in the softball game after two innings. Its lead increased to 7-3 by the end of the fourth. The Hawks added a run in the sixth and West Marshall plated two runs in the seventh.

Carson Fisk delivered a solo home run and two singles in the Hawk softball win. Mallory Loftus hit two singles and a double. Janelle Rozendaal doubled and singled.

Hitting two singles each were Shiloh Cunningham, Caitlin Alberts and Korinne Jansen. Denali Conover hit a double and Laci Keen had a single.

Conover was the winning pitcher. She allowed 11 hits, walked one and struck out two.

Lynnville-Sully’s teams are on the road for South Iowa Cedar League action on Wednesday against English Valleys. The Hawk softball team is 9-0 in conference play and the baseball squad is 2-7. Varsity games start at 6 p.m. in North English.
