PCM baseball gets walk-off win over East Marshall

PRAIRIE CITY — Sophomore Sage Burns started a Prairie City-Monroe come-from-behind victory with a pinch-hit three-run double in the sixth inning and senior Olin Meinders drew a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the eighth inning to send the Mustangs to a 5-4 win over East Marshall on Thursday.

East Marshall led 3-0 after five innings, but PCM scored four in the sixth to go in front and then won it in extras when Meinders drew a four-pitch walk with the bases full.

“We were a little aggressive early, but the kids became more patient as the game went along,” PCM coach Jeff Lindsay said.

The hometown Mustangs had nine hits in the game. Senior Reed Worth was 3-for-3 with two walks and four steals, senior Wes Cummings finished with one hit, two walks, one hit by pitch and two steals and Meinders tallied one run, one RBI, two walks and one hit by pitch.

The offense got going just in time to reward strong pitching performances by junior Trevor Bistline and sophomore Beau Webb.

Bistline kept PCM in the game as he allowed two earned runs on three hits in five innings. Webb earned his first career varsity win after tossing the final three innings and allowing one unearned run on one hit with three strikeouts.

“Both did a good job throwing strikes,” Lindsay said. “They got ahead in the counts and put pressure on the batters. I was happy with both guys.”

Junior Dane Owens had two hits and scored one run for PCM, which improved to 2-0 on the season. Junior Derek Brown collected one hit, scored one run and walked once and Burns’ only hit produced three runs and he also scored a run. Sophomore Andrew Mitchell had the final hit and senior Kaeden Van Soelen scored a run.

In the sixth inning, PCM had the bases loaded with no outs when Burns laced a three-run double over the center fielder’s head. Burns scored on an RBI groundout by senior Preston Van Wyk.

PCM opens Heart of Iowa Conference play with a road game against Saydel at 7:30 p.m. on Friday in Des Moines.
