Cardinal softball team opens with win; L-S teams split SICL games

KNOXVILLE — Newton High’s Cardinal softball team claimed a 6-3 win over host Knoxville Monday to open the 2019 season. The Class 4A No. 12 Cardinals had six hits in the victory.

Peyton Maher was the winning pitcher, allowing three runs on eight hits and one walk. Maher rang up 10 strikeouts.

Newton scored three runs in the first inning and one in the third to lead 4-1. The Panthers pushed across single runs in the fourth and fifth to make it 4-3. The Cardinals added two more runs in the sixth and shutout the Panthers in the final two innings.

Mackensie Brown singled and had a two-run double in the sixth. Lakin Jenkins hit two singles. Maher and Kameron Johnson had a single apiece.

Newton (1-0) hosts Marshalltown Tuesday for its home opener.

L-S softball, baseball split

SULLY — Lynnville-Sully’s softball and baseball teams opened with a split of South Iowa Cedar League games on Monday.

The Hawk softball team run-ruled visiting Montezuma 13-3 in five innings. Down on the Hawk baseball field, Montezuma’s Braves defeated the Hawks 6-1.

Denali Conover got the pitching win for the L-S softball team. Caitlin Alberts was 3-for-3 with three RBIs. The Hawk softball team had 14 hits and 10 stolen bases.

For the Hawk baseball team, Slater Young had the only two hits — singles — for L-S and scored its run.
