• Nathan W. Dewar, 29, of Newton, was charged and arrested for third-degree burglary at 11:06 a.m. May 17 in the 1200 block of West 16th Street South. According to the Newton Police Department, officers were called at 8:15 a.m. May 8 to a residence in the 300 block of East 24th Street South on a report of a burglary. Upon arrival, officers spoke to the victim who told them sometime in the afternoon hours on May 7, a man he believed to be Dewar entered his home to collect some of his belongings and take a shower. The victim had denied Dewar’s request because he was not home at the time. When the victim returned home, he found the door to the garage had been forced open. Dewar had helped himself to some coffee at the residence. The victim later spoke to a family member of Dewar’s who admitted it was Dewar who had entered the home and was sorry. Dewar was also arrested on a warrant for a parole violation. He was taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Shay R. Vannoy, 28, of Monroe, was charged with first-degree harassment and assault causing bodily injury or mental illness at 2:15 a.m. May 19 in the 300 block of West Eighth Street South. According to the Newton Police Department, officers were called to the 1200 block of First Street North in reference to an assault. Upon arrival, officers spoke to the victim who stated a male, identified as Vannoy, has slapped her in the face and told her he was going to kill her. NPD officers observed swelling on both cheeks and bruising around the bridge of her nose. The victim said she had been sitting in her living room with Vannoy when he shut off the living room lights. The victim told Vannoy she was not going to sit in the dark and turned the lights back on. She then walked toward her bedroom. Vannoy blocked her path and told her to sit in a chair in the living room, which the victim did. Vannoy then placed his knee on the victim’s stomach and put his hand around her throat, strangling her but she never blacked out or lost the ability to breathe. Vannoy then slapped the victims nose and held his had over her mouth. He then punched her once in each cheek. The victim then said she went to get up and Vannoy said he would kill her when he returned if she called the cops. The NPD made contact with Vannoy but he refused to answer any questions. He was arrested and taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Dominique J. Gibson, 23, of Newton, was charged with domestic abuse causing injury or mental illness at 5:53 p.m. May 19 in the 200 block of West 11th Street South. According to the Newton Police Department, officers were called to the residence on West 11th Street South on a report of a domestic fight. Upon arrival, officers made contact with the victim and Gibson. Gibson told officers the two had just ended their relationship and the victim had come to get some of his property. Gibson had requested a hug from the victim, which was denied. The victim made a comment about Gibson’s family, shoved her and spat on her three times. Gibson then said she punched the victim in the head and face. NPD officers observed the victim had a cut with visible blood above his right eye. Officers spoke to the victim, who had a similar statement. Gibson was arrested and taken to the Jasper County Jail.
