Newton Trap Team has busy weekend

Newton Trap Team had a three-competition weekend. The high school club shooting team has one more regular-season event before competing in its postseason.

“We have had a fantastic season so far,” Newton coach Paul Klein said. “All of the team members have done a great job. We’ve seen some fantastic scores, especially in trap, and we keep improving on skeet and sporting clays.”

On Friday, the Cardinals competed in a 5-stand sporing clays competition hosted by Oskaloosa. Newton’s best squad-finish was sixth place — 161 out of 250 targets. Pella Christian and Des Moines were the other teams competing.

Brooke Gifford took second place in the female senior division with a score of 37 out of 50. Trenton Winchell had Newton’s highest individual score in the men’s senior division. Winchell shot a 42 out of 50 to finish in a three-way tie for seventh place.

Newton’s Cardinals shot a skeet and sporting clays competition Saturday morning in Pella against teams from Ankeny, Pella Christian, CAM and South Hardin.

In skeet, Newton squads finished in fourth, fifth and sixth places. Lane Arrowood and Brodee Vest tied at 45 out of 50 to take fifth and sixth places, respectively. Vest also shot his first 25 straight targets.

Moving on to sporting clays, Newton squad members Daniel Townsend, Vest and Winchell shot a combined score of 251 out of 300 targets to finish third in the senior division. Newton also had squads finish in fourth and fifth place.

Then it was on to a trap shoot meet hosted by Montezuma on Saturday afternoon. Along with Newton and Montezuma, teams competing were Pella Christian, Grinnell, Centerville, Knoxville, BGM and Twin Cedars.

Placing first was the Cardinal squad of Dryden Dekoning, Arrowood, Vest, Tucker Wade and Townsend with a score of 226 out of 250. Landon Gearhart hit 48 out of 50 clay targets to claim first in the men’s senior division.

The Newton squad of Blase Byrd, Ethan Machin, John Sexton, Ryan Brown and Jarrett Antle shot a combined score of 221 to take third place.
