MARSHALLTOWN — Rylee Heryford was in contention for the Iowa Class 4A Region 3 individual championship all day on Monday at American Legion Golf Course in Marshalltown.

The Newton High freshman was at even par through her first five holes of the day and was tied for second after nine holes. Two holes later Heryford moved up in a tie for first with Ankeny’s Jacki Webb as they played in the same group.

Heryford shot an 80 in her first high school regional tournament. That score placed her third and she punched her ticket to the 2019 Iowa Class 4A State Girls’ Golf Tournament. The state meet is May 28-29 at Coldwater Links Golf Course in Ames.

Webb finished tied with Cedar Falls’ Amara Lytle — both are sophomores — atop the 4A regional field with 78s. Webb won the tiebreaker and was the regional meet medalist and Lytle was the runner-up. The top six individuals qualify for the state meet.

Claiming fourth and fifth were Linn-Mar teammates Tatum Depuydt, a sophomore, and senior Tori Niemeyer with scores of 81 and 82, respectively. Cedar Falls senior Megan Sawyer was sixth with an 84.

Cedar Falls nailed down the 4A Region 3 team championship with a four-player total of 342. Linn-Mar was second at 358. Both teams advance to next week’s state tournament.

Host Marshalltown was third with a 375 and Ankeny took fourth with a 384. Newton’s Cardinals rang up a fifth-place finish in the team standings with a 400.

Norwalk took sixth at 421 followed by Ottumwa at 424. Urbandale placed eighth with a 425 and Waterloo West was ninth with a 444.

Heryford had rounds of 38 and 42 for her 80 on the par-71 course. She carded 10 pars in the 18-hole event.

Sophomore Abby Price shot a 99 with four pars as she had rounds of 43 and 56 for Newton. Bekah Vasseau, another sophomore, had two pars on the day as she finished with a 100 (49-51). The final scoring round for Newton was by junior Jordon Pritchard. She had a 121 (56-68).

Senior Arieal Lum ended her high school career for Newton on Monday at the regional. She finished with a 124 on rounds of 56 and 68.
