NCSD board to vote on turf replacement at H.A. Lynn Stadium

New computers, Berg furniture sale date also on docket

Worn-out turf at the H.A. Lynn Stadium is expected to be replaced following a positive vote outcome from the Newton Community School District Board of Education during its meeting Monday night.

NCSD Superintendent Bob Callaghan said the current turf at the stadium accommodating school football, soccer and track teams was first installed in 2008. The turf, he added, is supposed to be replaced every eight to 10 years.

“That turf is tearing and it’s been through 10 or 11 winters,” Callaghan said. “So it’s meant to be replaced.”

Setting a sale date

The school board will host a public hearing at 6:50 p.m. to set a date for the proposed sale of furnishings collected from the old Berg Middle School.

Upon closing the public hearing, the school board will later vote on setting the sale date from 8 a.m. to noon June 15 at the Meisner Center.

At a November 2018 school board meeting, members deliberated its best course of action was to preserve the old middle school furniture that wasn’t going to be reused or repurposed into storage.

New tech

Staff has requested school board approval of the purchase of 475 Chromebooks for students and 110 laptops for staff.

The ACER C738T Chromebooks are expected to cost about $152,000. The Dell Latitude 5590 laptop package will cost roughly $112,000.

In other action Monday, the school board will:

• Certify the class of 2019 graduates for WEST Academy and Newton High School.

• Recap Red Pride Service Day accomplishments from the beginning of the month.

• Receive construction updates of Berg Middle School and the softball complex.
