DAR presents Good Citizens Awards

DAR Good Citizens Awards were presented to two area high school seniors at the Grinnell Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution meeting May 11 at the Centre for Arts and Artists in Newton.

Rachel Rhoads, a senior at Newton High School, was the first place winner and received a $250 award. Kylee Jo Taylor, senior at Montezuma High School, was the second place winner and was awarded $100.

Students selected as DAR Good Citizens exhibit qualities of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism. Faculty members at their respective high schools select three seniors who have demonstrated these qualities. From these three students, the senior class selects one student as their school’s DAR Good Citizen. The selected student then writes a two hour proctored essay which is judged to determine the chapter award winner.

This year’s prompt was, “What new challenges will America face as we move forward into the future?”
