Newton Police Department

• Haley R. Gillum, 19, of Montezuma, and Alexis M. Kozozenski, 18, of St. Peters, Mo., were charged with fifth-degree theft at 6:02 p.m. May 12. According to the Newton Police Department, officers were called to Walmart on a report of shoplifting. Upon arrival, officers spoke to Gillum and Kozozenski who admitted to leaving the store and not paying for the items. Both were arrested and taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Sierra A. Etter, 18, of Newton, was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a controlled substance — marijuana at 11:51 p.m. May 13 in the 300 block of Third Avenue East. According to the Newton Police Department, officers initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle for a non-functioning third brake light. Officers identified Etter as the driver. While speaking to her, officers could smell an odor or marijuana coming from the vehicle. Officers searched the vehicle and found two clear plastic bags containing a green leafy substance consistent with marijuana. The NPD also found a grinder and multiple marijuana cigarettes in the cupholder of the passenger door. Officers found three empty liquor bottles in the front compartment of the vehicle but did not charge her with open container. Officers placed Etter under arrest and gave her a warning for the non-functioning brake light. She was transported to the Jasper County Jail.
