• Thomas W. Nelson, 32, of Newton is charged with public intoxication and interference with official acts at 2:21 a.m. April 20 in the 700 block of First Avenue East. According to the Newton Police Department, officers observed a man, identified as Nelson, slumped over on a step and appeared to be sleeping. The NPD woke Nelson and observed he smelled of alcohol and had red, watery bloodshot eyes and was confused as to where he was. Nelson told police he had been drinking and intended to get a cab. Nelson was offered a preliminary breath test, he then stood up and took off running from the police. Officers warned Nelson to stop or he would be tased. Nelson continued running from police and was tased by officers. Nelson was arrested and taken into custody. He refused a chemical test after arriving at the Jasper County Jail.
