Cardinals shoot season-low at Oskaloosa Invite

OSKALOOSA — Combining for the best round of golf this season, Newton High’s boys shot a season-low 342 to finish 10th at Tuesday’s Oskaloosa Invitational.

Nevada won the 18-hole competition with a 298 and Pella was second with a 304 led by medalist Will Simpson’s 72. Mount Pleasant’s Trace White was the runner-up medalist with a 73.

There were 15 teams in the event including six Little Hawkeye Conference teams. Along with Pella, Norwalk was fourth at 320 and host Oskaloosa fifth at 327.

Grinnell finished eighth at 337 and Newton was 10th. Pella Christian came in at 13th with a 274.

Just out of the top 20 individuals was Newton junior Damon Reynolds with his season-low 80 on rounds of 42 and 38. The 19th and 20th place finishers had 80s also.

Senior Colin McAnally had rounds of 39 and 42 for a season-best 81.

“Damon played 18 holes with only one hole worse than a bogey. Colin is really starting to find his groove,” Newton head coach Pat Riley said. “I’m pleased with how the whole team played.”

Freshman Ethan Walker finished with an 89 (44-45) and freshman Lincoln Ergenbright finished the top four for Newton with a 92 (43-49).

Junior Nate Keith was one stroke behind at 93 (49-44). Junior Parker Sherwood had a 112 (56-56).

“Ethan is just starting to really tap into his abilities. Lincoln chipped in for a birdie on his last hole to finish strong. They both will get better with more experience,” Riley said. “Lincoln’s swing is good so he just needs to continue to be a more consistent ball striker.”

Riley said Keith just about had a hole-in-one in Tuesday’s meet and his getting more consistent every week. Sherwood played in his first varsity meet.

“Parker had to get over the nerves of his first start. He has been playing the best on the JV and earned his spot (Tuesday) in the varsity meet,” Riley said. “We have a good stretch coming up here to test our endurance.”

The Cardinals play in the Winterset Invitational at noon on Friday then head to the Knoxville Invitational at 9 a.m. on Saturday. On Monday, they are at the Grinnell Invitational followed by a Little Hawkeye Conference triangular meet with Pella Christian and Pella at Pella on Tuesday.
