Undefeated Eagles beat Cardinals

Seniors Haley Rinehart and Cristal Perez battled hard in an effort to give Newton High’s Cardinals a match victory on Tuesday. The Cardinal tennis duo went to a third-set tiebreaker in its No. 5 doubles match against visiting Pella Christian.

Pella Christian’s Maria Heap and Kendra Branderhorst pulled out a 6-7 (3), 7-5, 10-7 win over Rinehart and Perez. The Eagles (9-0) made a clean sweep, 11-0, against the Cardinals at Aurora Heights Park.

Newton’s No. 1 singles player junior Ashley Loehr lost 6-1, 6-1 to Morgan Bush and at No. 2 singles, sophomore Jamie Rogers lost 6-0, 6-2 to Lizzie Posthuma. Junior Kaylee Cross dropped a 6-1, 6-1 decision to PC’s Jaden Joy Morgan at No. 3 singles.

In the No. 4 singles match, PC’s Kitty Gu beat Newton junior Jaysea Miller 6-2, 6-0. Newton junior Kloe Pettigrew lost 6-1, 6-0 to Megan Kramer at No. 5 singles and freshman Maggie Garrett lost 6-1, 6-2 to PC’s Kelly Van Wyk at No. 6 singles.

Loehr and Pettigrew lost to PC’s Bush and Posthuma 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1 doubles while Morgan and Kramer beat Newton’s Rogers and Miller 7-5, 6-3 at No. 2 doubles.

Cross and senior Delaney Naselroad lost 6-0, 6-0 to Gu and Olivia Van Der Pol at No. 3 doubles. Garrett and junior Lily Rausch lost 6-0, 7-6 (5) to Van Wyk and Adrienne Vander Molen at No. 4 doubles.

Newton is 0-4 in LHC duals and 1-6 overall. The Cardinals play at 4:15 p.m. Thursday at Indianola in a LHC dual.
