PCM finishes second at home tourney

MONROE — PCM’s top two golfers were near the top of the overall standings as expected on April 22 during the Mustangs’ annual home invitational.

It was the supporting cast that stepped up in a big way for PCM though as sophomores Gatlin Boell, Grant Landgrebe and Gabe Lanphier all carded career-best scores to help push the Mustangs to second as a team.

Seniors Andrew Van Ryswyk and Reed Worth both finished tied for third with 79s, but Boell was tied for seventh with an 81 as the Mustangs shot a 327 in the runner-up position. They were one stroke better than Class 3A Grinnell.

Des Moines Christian won the tournament with a 320 after five of its six golfers shot an 82 or better. Jake Weissenburger was the medalist with a 77. Grinnell’s Cole McGriff finished second with a 78.

This was Des Moines Christian’s first 18-hole tournament of the season. PCM and Grinnell were both eight shots better than the average they came in with.

Van Ryswyk and Worth had identical 39-40 cards to finish with 79s. Boell shot a 42 on the front nine but had a team-best 39 on the back side. Landgrebe finished with a career-best 88 as the final counting score, and Lanphier shot a career-best 90 as a non-counting score.

Sophomore Brian Nicholson played in the first varsity tournament of his career and shot a non-counting 100. He replaced sophomore Andrew Mitchell, who injured his hand during a spring baseball game. Mitchell had been in PCM’s top four before the injury.

Boone finished a distant fourth with a 343, while Bondurant-Farrar was fifth with a 345. Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont (367), Chariton (379) and Pella Christian (387) completed the eight-team field.
