PCM boys win EBF Rocket Relays, Colfax-Mingo finishes fourth

EDDYVILLE — Prairie City-Monroe’s boys’ track and field team piled up 18 top-three finishes and cruised to the Class A team title at the annual EBF Boys Rocket Relays on Tuesday night.

The Mustangs won five individual events and seven total, collected double points in four races and scored 159 points on the night to win their second team title of the season.

Colfax-Mingo collected a pair of wins and finished second four times, scoring 74 points in fourth. The field included six teams. Lynnville-Sully (112) was second followed by Pella Christian (101) in third. Van Buren (71) and EBF (62) completed the field.

For PCM, Cole Dustin won the 110-meter high hurdles (season-best 15.93 seconds) and the high jump (5 feet, 8 inches), Reed Worth won the 400 (52.82 seconds), Payton Strovers won the long jump (19-11 3/4) and Beau Webb was victorious in the 1,600 (4:53.74).

PCM also won the 4x100 and shuttle hurdle relay.

The 4x100 relay team which will run at the Drake Relays on Saturday finished first on Tuesday with a time of 45.08. The foursome included Jacob Van Winkle, Worth, Brayton Van Dyke and Strovers.

The shuttle hurdle relay team of Jarron Trausch, Nigel Sperfslage, Worth and Dustin won with a time of 1:04.54.

Colfax-Mingo’s wins came from Coleman Craig in the 3,200 (season-best 11:49.41) and the 4x800 relay. The foursome of Colton Hernandez, Hunter Green, Noah Strohmeyer and Zach Steenhoek won the race in a season-best time of 9:16.82.

PCM’s individual second-place finish came from Worth in the 200 (23.75). The 4x200, 4x400, 4x800, sprint medley and distance medley relays also were second.

The 4x200 relay team of Van Dyke, Sperfslage, Wes Cummings and Trausch were second in 1:36.91, the 4x400 relay team of Aidan Anderson, Cummings, Connor Bennett and Van Winkle took second in a season-best time of 3:42.85 and the 4x800 relay team of Landon Fenton, Carson Duinink, Ayrton Breckenridge and Fabio Sammet was second in a season-best time of 9:43.34.

The sprint medley relay included Van Dyke, Strovers, Sperfslage and Webb and they finished in 1:42.04. The distance medley relay featured Cummings, Trausch, Bennett and Webb and they hit the finish line in 3:54.91.

Colfax-Mingo’s second-place finishes came Zarek Hill in the 400 hurdles (season-best 57.03) and the long jump (19-4), Steenhoek in the 1,600 (season-best 5:10.99) and the 4x100 relay team of Ethan Summy, Hernandez, Strohmeyer and Tanner Gorman, which completed the race in 49.83 seconds.

PCM claimed five third-place finishes, including Strovers in the 100 (11.89), Anderson in the 400 (55.56), Sperfslage in the 400 hurdles (57.27) and Isaac Telfer in both the shot put (44-1 1/2) and discus (season-best 121-2).

The Mustangs also were top-six individually in three other events. Van Winkle took fourth in the 100 (12.15) and 200 (23.93) and Duinink (season-best 2:27.35) and Sammet (2:29.46) were fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 800.

For Colfax-Mingo, AJ Gibson was fourth in the high jump (5-4), Justin Myers was sixth in the 110 high hurdles (20.53) and Craig finished sixth in the 1,600 (5:34.61).

The Tigerhawks also were fourth in the 4x200, sprint medley and shuttle hurdle relay.

The 4x200 relay team of Gibson, Strohmeyer, Hernandez and Holister Koenig finished the race in 1:42.53.

The sprint medley team of Summy, Steenhoek, Koenig and Gibson finished in 1:46.01.

The shuttle hurdle relay team of Myers, Tim Carroll, Avery Lees and Hernandez finished in 1:15.33.

PCM hosts its annual boys meet at Saydel at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday in Des Moines.

Colfax-Mingo competes at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday in Bondurant.
