Red Hat Mineral Belles

The Red Hat Mineral Belles gathered April 10 a the Lemon Tree Tea Room in Newton. Aretta Franz was hostess.

We were pleased to have our snowbirds Norma Jean and Neoma back with us. The afternoon was spent enjoying the good food and much visiting.

The next gathering will be at 1 p.m. May 8 at the Brick Street Cafe in Bondurant. Neoma Meisel will be hostess.

Those present for the enjoyable day were Shirley Williams, Marilyn Rhone, Norma Jean Warnock, Virginia Hunter, Meoma Meisel, Mary Pratt and hostess Aretta Franz.

Colfax Historical Society

The Colfax Historical Society met April 15. The meeting was called to order at 7:05 p.m. by president Shawn Cogley and he thanked everyone for attending. Members present were Shawn, Kevin and BJ Williams, Karen Russell, Peggy Dvorak, Joyce Jessen, Stanley Daft, Larry Daft, Aaron Bartholmey, Judy Sullivan, Larry Hurto, Norma Warnock, Rebecca Evans, Doug Wilson, Randy Marchant, Cindy L. Van Dusseldorp and guest, KC Huffman. Minutes of the March 18 meeting were read and approved. Treasurer’s report was presented and approved.

A letter was read and a check received from Chapter BA, P.E.O. stating that they were donating $60 to the Colfax Historical Society to honor Keith and Karen Russell on their 60th wedding anniversary. A thank you note was sent to them.

Randy introduced KC Huffman, a student at Iowa State University majoring in history, who was requesting permission to serve as an intern for the summer to put in hours working towards six credits from June to Aug. 18. He is interested in Colfax’s history and help with inventory. Randy is chairperson of the committee consisting of Peggy, Kevin, Aaron and Joyce to set goals for KC.

The Colfax Main Street fundraiser vendor fair will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 20 in the Community Center and the Easter Egg Hunt will take place at 10 a.m. on the grounds. Peggy and Cindy will be volunteering from 9 a.m. to noon and Karen and Randy will work from noon to 3 p.m. at a table selling items from our gift shop.

Larry H. talked about a River to River Road Trip through Colfax on Friday, Sept. 20. He said Jennifer James would be available from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. that day to show her pictures. He will do more checking on all the particulars and report back. Larry H. will be available to help at that event.

Rebecca and Peggy reported on the proposed grant and they have decided that we do not have enough time to get a required audit before the grant deadline. There may be other grants we can submit.

Kevin sent pictures around about a gravity machine made by Dr. Elmer Black, as the Jasper County Historical Museum is wishing to donate it to our museum. Kevin has accepted it and would like help getting it moved to our location.

Larry H. handed out pamphlets on Preserve Iowa Summit June 6-8 in Newton. He encouraged everyone to attend.

Peggy and Cindy volunteered to sell old trophies at C-M Jr/Sr High on Alumni Day Saturday, May 25.

The museum will be open on the second Saturday of the month May 11 from 10 a.m.to 2 p.m. The volunteers will be Peggy and Judy from 10 a.m. to noon and from noon until 2 p.m. will be Don and Joyce Jessen. Admission is free. Also, we will be open Sundays from 2 to 4 p.m. beginning Sunday, May 26 with Kevin and BJ volunteering. We will continue with open Sundays up to and including, Sunday, Sept. 1.

A big thank you to Joyce for all her cleaning efforts and to Judy for serving as secretary for the winter.

Next meeting will be at 7 p.m. May 20. It is open to anyone who would like to attend.
