Hawk boys win BGM Bear Trax Classic Class B title

BROOKLYN — Rylan James captured two gold medals in winning the discus and the shot put at Tuesday’s BGM Bear Trax Classic. James’ two event victories helped Lynnville Sully’s boys win the Classic’s Class B team championship.

The Hawks tallied 137 points with HLV in second with 135 points. Iowa Valley was third with 115 points followed by North Mahaska at 76, Keota at 56, Meskwaki Settlement at 24 and English Valley in seventh with 23 points.

James won the discus with a personal-best toss of 131 feet, 1 inch. He took first in the shot put with a throw of 48-2 1/2 with teammate Grant Wehrle in third at 40-4 3/4.

Staying in the field events, Gage Vander Leest used a personal-best leap of 19-9 1/2 to take the gold in the long jump. Kinnick McFarland was fourth at 18-7 1/2. Ryan Annee placed third in the high jump at 5-2.

Vander Leest won the 110-meter hurdles in 15.63 seconds and Carter Dunsbergen was fourth at 18.07. Lynnville-Sully’s shuttle hurdle relay team of Dunsbergen, McFarland, Blake Rea and Vander Leest was second in 1 minute, 07.47 seconds.

Vander Leest, Nate Stock, McFarland and Tyson Vander Linden combined for a first-place time of 46.06 seconds in the 4x100 relay. Vander Linden was edged out in the 100 by Iowa Valley’s Joe Zuber, who won in 11.69 to Vander Linden’s 11.93.

Kodie Waggoner was fifth in 13.06 in the 100. Ethan Wyma was fourth in the 400 in 59.38.

Isaac Johnson placed second in the 3,000 in 12:24.85 and Mason Jansen was fourth in 13:03. Jansen ran fourth in the 1,600 in 5:41.92. Rea was fifth in the 400 hurdles in 1:06.36 and Slater Young took fourth in the 200 in 25.69.

The 4x400 relay team of Young, Wyma, Rea and McFarland was second in 3:53.29. The sprint medley relay foursome of Evan Squires, Stock, Wyma and Young was fourth in 1:46.48.

Owen Norrish, Josh Hardenbrook, Braden Alberts and CJ Snethen combined for fourth in the 4x800 relay in 10:24.43. The distance medley relay team of Nick Rea, Mason Rodibaugh, Gage Elscott and Johnson placed fourth in 4:40.26.

The 4x200 relay team of Aiden LeCompte, Annee, Brodey Johnson and Waggoner was sixth in 1:48.08.

Lynnville-Sully competes at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday in Eddyville.
