Heryford snares sixth to lead Cardinals at Valley’s Lamson Invite

WEST DES MOINES — Newton High freshman Rylee Heryford turned in her best 9-hole score and worst 9-hole score on the same day. But her worst still was better than most of the golfers at Monday’s Valley Lamson Invitational girls’ golf tournament.

Heryford finished with an 83 for the 18-hole event, placing sixth after a playoff. Valley’s Paige Hoffman, a sophomore, was the medalist with a 72. Bettendorf-Rivermont-Morning Star freshman Shannyn Vogler was runner-up at 74.

Newton finished with a four-player score of 408 for 11th out of 16 teams. Valley won with a 326 and B-R-M was second at 344.

Heryford tied with Ankeny’s Jace Webb with an 83. She fired a season-best 37 on her front nine then had a 46 on her back nine.

On that front nine, Heryford had an eagle on the Par 4 No. 4. She made it to the hole in two shots on the 250-yard No. 4, chipping in from 68 yards.

After playing Willow Creek Golf Courses’ White nine holes, the Cardinal girls had a season-best 189, shaving 11 shots off their last nine-hole total.

Sophomores Bekah Vasseau and Abby Price had 46 and 49 while senior Nycole Patton was at 57 and junior Jordan Pritchard was at 58 — all season’s best. Freshman Emily Zink had a 73 at the turn.

On the Red nine holes, Pritchard had a 56 for a new season’s best and she finished with 114, which was fourth best for Newton.

Vasseau ended up with a 100 (46-59) and Price shot an 111 (49-62). The two non-scoring totals were Patton’s 117 (57-60) and Zink’s 149 (73-76).

Newton hosts a Little Hawkeye Conference triangular with Grinnell and Indianola at 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday. The teams play at Newton’s Westwood Golf Club. Newton is 2-0 in conference play.
