Newton man sentenced to 6 years in prison for firearm possession

A 35-year-old Newton man was sentenced to six years in prison and an additional three years of supervised release for possession of a firearm by a felon.

Bryan Curtis Odem received his sentence Tuesday from Chief United States District Court Judge James Jarvey, according to a press release from the U.S. Department of Justice. The count is in violation of Title 18 of the United States Code, section 922.

Odem submitted a guilty plea for the count in federal court, the release said.

The incident took place in July 2018, which started during a physical altercation with a victim. After Odem struck the individual, he took the victim’s Smith & Wesson nine-millimeter pistol and fled the scene.

The incident took place 24 hours after Odem was released from the United States Bureau of Prisons, wrapping up a sentencing for a prior federal firearms count.

While the case was prosecuted by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa, the case was investigated by Newton Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
