Four things to know from the March Baxter City Council meeting

1. The city council discussed the process to hire a new police chief. Mayor Gennipher Copenhagen reviewed the proposed interview process which will take place April 5 and 6.

To start the process, the council reviewed and approved an amended job described submitted Jeff Cayler of Cayler Consulting. A public social will be held at 6 p.m. April 5 at the Community Building, 203 S. Main St., to provide an opportunity for residents to meet and speak with the candidates and their families. Candidate interviews will follow and be done by interview panels from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the school.

2. The 2019-2020 fiscal year budget was unanimously approved following a public hearing during the meeting.

3. Jason Miller with MSA Professional Services gave an update on city projects. The city plans to speak with local contracts and proceed accordingly with stormwater improvements. The city agreed to forego hydraulic evaluations for the Geise Park pond restoration. Plans and specifications for the project are to be completed by the end of March.

Right-of-way pavement compliance training will be scheduled with public works and be completed by the end of March. A drag application for the South West Avenue Project, a Community Development Block Grant scheduled project, will be ready for the city council to review by the end of March.

4. Discussion was had on angle parking for the north side of East State street adjacent to High Street Apartments. The council made the decision to change the three existing angle parking spaces to two parallel spaces to give better visibility at the intersection. An ordinance change will be on the April council meeting agenda.
