GRINNELL — Colfax-Mingo senior Braedynn Rawlins is ready for her final track and field season.

Despite not throwing as far as she had hoped, Rawlins still won her second straight South Iowa Cedar League Conference Indoor shot put title on March 18. And set a new conference indoor record in the process.

Rawlins was the only winner for the Tigerhawks on the night, but junior Abbey McConeghey was the runner-up in the 800-meter run.

“I wanted to throw further, but overall I am happy with where I am at. It’s a good start to the season,” Rawlins said.

Rawlins won the SICL Indoor meet for the first time last season after placing third as a sophomore. Her winning throw of 35 feet, 4 inches on Monday set a new SICL indoor record.

“I had a good feeling coming in and was hoping to win, but you never know what other teams have or what freshmen come in and do well,” Rawlins said.

The SICL Indoor meet does not keep team scores.

The Colfax-Mingo boys got a win from junior Brady Berkey in the high jump. Berkey also helped the Tigerhawks finish second in two relays.

McConeghey missed her entire sophomore season with an injury. She returned to the oval Monday and was second in the 800 and helped the Tigerhawks to third in the 4x800 relay.

McConeghey finished the 800 in 2 minutes, 51.33 seconds.

The 4x800 relay team featured senior Ilia Hostetter, McConeghey, junior Jodine Woods and sophomore Chelsey Temple, and the foursome was third with a time of 12:03.17.

Hostetter grabbed another third-place finish in the 1,500 run. She was timed at 6:10.93.

The final top-five finish for the girls came in the distance medley relay. That team included Woods, freshman Kylie Doty, sophomore Riley Carroll and Hostetter, and they finished in 5:09.11.

Berkey is an SICL champion after winning the high jump in his first try. The Tigerhawk boys also were second in the distance medley and 4x400 relays.

Berkey was just a golfer his first two spring seasons at Colfax-Mingo. This season, he will try golf and track, and his first track season is off to a great start after a win in the high jump.

“I didn’t expect to win tonight,” Berkey said. “I don’t have very good form yet. I think it can be better once my form gets better.”

Berkey won the event with a leap of 5-8. He also helped the Tigerhawks finish second in the distance medley and 4x400 relays.

The distance medley relay team included sophomore A.J. Gibson, Berkey, senior Zarek Hill and junior Hunter Green and they crossed the finish line in 4:05.49.

The 4x400 relay team featured Berkey, senior Holister Koenig, Gibson and Hill, and that foursome finished second in 3:48.82. Hill nearly rallied the Tigerhawks to a win, but HLV finished in 3:48.67.

“I feel we did a good job,” Berkey said. “It’s harder to run indoors and this was the first time a lot of us ran these relays. It’s a good start.”

Hill also finished third in the 60 high hurdles. His unoffical time was clocked at 8.8 seconds. There was a timing issue with the boys 60 high hurdles and the 60 dash so all times for the event are unofficial.

The final top-five finish for the Tigerhawks came in the 400 where Koenig placed fifth with a time of 59.01.

It is Spring Break for Colfax-Mingo. The Tigerhawks were missing a few athletes, including senior Jordan Atwood from the girls’ team. Colfax-Mingo’s boys’ team also held out junior Trinity Schroeder because of a minor injury.

Colfax-Mingo hosts its annual indoor meet at Grinnell College at 4:30 p.m. on March 21 in Grinnell.
