Timothy “Tim” James Cottrell, 54, of Newton, died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2019, in rural Kellogg. A memorial service will begin at 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23 at the United Congregational Church of Christ in Newton. The family will greet friends after the service with a potluck meal at the church. Family and friends are encouraged to bring a dish to share. Memorials to the Salvation Army Food Pantry may be left at the

Tim, the son of David and Esther (Handeland) Cottrell, was born May 28, 1964, in Newton. He grew up in Brooklyn and served his country in the U.S. Navy. While in the Navy he lived around the country before moving back to Newton in 1996. On June 16, 2001, Tim was united in marriage with Dorothy Lynn Margaritz at the Maytag Bowl in Newton. Tim was a jack of all trades and did many handyman type of jobs around the area. He also enjoyed sewing hot tub and boat covers, scrubs and blanket coats. Tim had been a member of the Izaak Walton League and UCC in Newton. He loved volunteering at the Salvation Army Food Pantry, fishing, drawing and all kinds of music.

Tim is survived by his wife, Lynn Cottrell of Newton; children, Alicia Mitchell of West Des Moines, April May Gourd of Salt LakeCity, Utah, Crystal (Hank) Richardson of Bettendorf, Catfish Cottrell of Newton and Dakota Noftsger of Newton; his six grandchildren, Alex, Summer, Jade, Kayden, Hope and Charlotte; father, David Cottrell of Chariton; step-father, David Elliott of Newton; his siblings, Tammy (Mike) Thompson, Tanya (Kevin) Neef, John (Nicole) Elliott, Jeannie Cottrell, Amy Hall, Scott (Carrie) Cottrell and Doug (Wendy) Cottrell; many step-siblings; and his many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Esther Elliott.​
