Big second quarter pushes PCM boys to district final

VAN METER — PCM’s boys’ basketball team struggled offensively for most of its Class 2A District 10 semifinal game with Chariton on Feb. 14.

The Mustangs did score 23 points in the second quarter, and that effort highlighted a 47-39 postseason victory over the Chargers.

Senior Andrew Van Ryswyk tallied 23 points and nine rebounds, senior Isaac Telfer had 11 points and three rebounds and senior Reed Worth scored eight points, grabbed four rebounds, dished out two assists and swiped two steals.

Sophomore Gatlin Boell scored the team’s other five points and dished out a team-high three assists. Junior Derek Brown grabbed five rebounds and junior Jason Stafford pulled down three boards and delivered two assists.

PCM (13-7) was 17-of-43 from the field and 4-of-19 from 3-point range. The Mustangs, who has won four straight games, did make 9-of-10 from the free-throw line.

The game was tied at 10 after the first quarter. A 23-9 second quarter put PCM ahead for good. Chariton (13-7) outscored the Mustangs 20-14 in the second half.

PCM played Van Meter (19-2) in the district final on Feb. 19. The substate final is at 7 p.m. on Feb. 23 in Knoxville.
