Newton's VanderSchel qualifies for 2A state bowling tourney

Bowling a 300 game in district action boosted Newton High junior Carter VanderSchel into contention for a berth in the 2019 Iowa Class 2A State Bowling Tournament. After Wednesday’s district, he had to wait until Thursday afternoon to know if he earned an at-large berth.

VanderSchel is the first individual Cardinal boys’ bowler to qualify for a state tournament, Newton’s boys qualified as a team for the first time in 2014 competing in the Class 1A tournament.

VanderSchel will competed in the Class 2A state tournament on Tuesday at the Cadillac Lanes in Waterloo. The co-ed tournament begins at 10 a.m. with the Parade of Bowlers and the National Anthem. Competition begins at approximately 10:20 a.m.

VanderSchel has been assigned to bowl on Lane 6 at the state tournament.

VanderSchel finished with a 481 series to take the runner-up spot at district on Wednesday. He had the fifth highest pin count of the 12 individual state qualifiers.

Brock Larson, a senior from North Scott, is the returning 2A runner-up and has the top score coming out of the district tournaments with a 525. LeMars senior Bryce Time had a 504 and Cedar Rapids Xavier freshman had a 489. Junior Kody Sapp of Keokuk, who beat VanderSchel at district, had a 486.

Admission for the tournament is $10 per person. Spectator entrances will be at the east sides of the building.

Spectators who purchase online tickets from the GoFan website will be admitted at 8:30 a.m. Spectators purchasing tickets on-site will be admitted at 9 a.m.
