Hawks, Mustangs, Bolts win boys’ postseason games

Three area high school boys’ basketball teams went into postseason games on Thursday night, and all came away with victories. Lynnville-Sully and Baxter advanced in Class 1A District 9 play and Prairie City-Monroe will play for the Class 2A District 10 championship.

Lynnville-Sully 75, Collins-Maxwell 37

SULLY — A 32-point outburst in the second quarter by the Lynnville-Sully Hawks blew open a close game against Collins-Maxwell on Thursday at Sully. The Hawks rolled from there to win 75-37 in Class 1A District 9 quarterfinal play.

The Spartans hung tough in the first eight minutes, trailing the hosting Hawks 13-12. The Hawks gained a 45-20 halftime lead then outscored the Spartans 20-10 in the third quarter to put it away.

“We started off a little slow, but we were able to put together a big second quarter,” Lynnville-Sully coach Nick Harthoorn said. “I was also pleased with the way we played in the second half. It was nice to see all our seniors get involved in their last game in our gym.”

Blaize Kulhmann was blazing from 3-pointer range, hitting 6-of-8 attempts beyond the arc for 21 points for the Hawks. He also had three steals Lynnville-Sully shot 50 percent, 28-of-56, overall from the field and hit 9-of-13 free throw attempts.

Zane Fraker and Gage Vander Leest had 11 points apiece for the Hawks. Rylan James had 10 rebounds and nine points while Bray Noun Harder had nine points and five assists. Kinnick McFarland scored eight points, Logan Ingersoll had four and Cale Foster had two points.

John Kasper scored 18 points for the Spartans and Brett Livesay had 13 points.

The Hawks (15-5) play BGM at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday in a district semifinal doubleheader at Montezuma.

Baxter 53, Sigourney 52 (OT)

MONTEZUMA — Baxter’s Bolts were in charge of a 10-point lead, 32-22 — heading into the fourth quarter in Thursday’s Class 1A District 9 quarterfinal against Sigourney at Montezuma.

The Savages outscored the Bolts 22-12 in the fourth quarter to forge a 44-44 tie at the end of regulation. The Bolts edged out a 53-52 win in overtime to move into the district semifinals.

The Bolts led 14-7 after one period and it was leading 19-16 at halftime. Baxter shot 43 percent, 21-of-49, from the field.

Cole Damman hit three 3-pointers on his way to 14 points and dished out five assists. Carter Nelson had a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Will Clapper scored eight and pulled 10 rebounds.

Brendyn Padget added eight points and Kael Johnston had six points. Ian Thomson had three points and five assists.

The Savages got 22 points from Dustin Haines, hitting six 3-pointers, and 20 points from Spencer Magill, netting four 3’s,

Baxter (11-9) plays No. 2 Montezuma at 8 p.m. on Tuesday in the district semifinal doubleheader at Montezuma.

PCM 47, Chariton 39

VAN METER — Scoring 19 of his game-high 23 points in the first half, Andrew Van Ryswyk led the PCM Mustangs to a 47-39 win over Chariton in Thursday’s Class 2A District 10 semifinals.

The teams were tied 10-all at the end of the first quarter. PCM outscored the Chargers 23-9 in the second period to take control.

PCM held off Chariton in the second half. The Chargers had a 20-14 scoring edge in the final 16 minutes of play.

Isaac Telfer tossed in nine points and Reed Worth had eight. Gatlin Boell had five points.

Chariton was led by Dylan Cain with 14 and Nathan Weaver with 11 points.

PCM (13-7) plays 2A No. 6 Van Meter — a 66-34 winner over Pleasantville Thursday — in Tuesday’s district title game. The teams meet at 7 p.m. in Norwalk.
