Cardinal wrestling quartet qualifies for 3A state

JOHNSTON — Destin Schroder’s goal going into his junior wrestling season was to qualify for the state tournament. He had never done that before.

Schroder punched his ticket to the 2019 Iowa Class 3A state wrestling tournament with a pin of Valley’s C.J. Stillman early in the third-period of182-pound match. The Newton High Cardinal claimed the 3A District 6 182-pound championship.

Three other Cardinals join Schroder heading to this week’s state tournament at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

Junior Gage Linahon is making his third straight trip to the 3A state meet. He lost of second-ranked Beau Lombardi, 4-2 in the 195-pound title match.

Senior Jaise Gulling is headed for his second straight state meet at 195 pounds. He lost by a 15-0 technical fall to seventh-ranked Javian Rolley of Johnston.

At 113 pounds, Cardinal freshman Brennan Amos reached the district title match. He dropped a 9-5 decision to Dowling Catholic’s Ethan Mahoney.

Linahon, Gulling and Amos captured second place in their weight classes without a wrestleback contest on Saturday. The foursome led the Cardinals to a third-place team finish in the District 6 tournament hosted by Johnston.

Valley won the district team title with 212 points and Johnston was second with 177. Newton scored 145.5 points for third.

Dowling Catholic was fourth at 140 followed by Des Moines Abraham Lincoln with 127.5 points for fifth.Urbandale was sixth with 123 points, Carroll was seventh at 118.5 and Des Moines North-Hoover was eighth.

Senior Blake Cockerton, sophomores Anthony Bestell and Gabe Abram wrestled in third-place matches at 126, 106 and 285, respectively. Cockerton and Bestell won but by rule there were no wrestleback opportunities for the two. Abram finished fourth in 285.

Senior Thomas Cox finished his high school wrestling career with a 10-5 win over Quinn Covill of Dowling to take fifth at 170. Junior Canaan Terpstra was fifth at 145 pounds by pinning Urbandale’s Spencer Davis.

At 160 pounds, senior Reece Caves went 1-2 on his final day of high school wrestling. Caves took sixth at the district meet.

Also placing sixth was junior Zane Kohlmeyer at 152 pounds.

Freshmen Damien Bayles (120) and Colin Sharp (138) were both 0-2 in their first district meet action.

The first round of the Class 3A state wrestling tournament begins at 9 a.m. on Thursday. The first round of consolation matches are also on Thursday morning.

On Friday are quarterfinals and second-round consolation matches in the morning and semifinals and third-round consolation matches in the afternoon.

Consolation semifinals and finals are from 10 a.m.-2:15 p.m. on Saturday. The state finals for Class 3A, 2A and 1A begin at 6 p.m. Saturday.
