Multiple vehicle rollovers along I-80 Sunday

Early morning snowfall a hazard for drivers

Multiple accidents and rollovers across Jasper County kept law enforcement officials busy Sunday, as an early morning snowfall caused road conditions to worsen and resulted in several drivers stranded in ditches along Interstate 80.

As of 10:45 a.m. Sunday, the Newton Daily News sighted six vehicles in ditches or just off of the shoulder in between the 176 and 178 mile-markers of Interstate 80; four of which were along the westbound lane of the interstate and two along the eastbound lane.

A black, four-door Chevrolet Colorado LT was flipped upside down a few miles away from the Lynnville/Oakland Acres exit. Traveling westbound on Interstate 80, a red Ram 1500 pickup truck was seen several yards away from the highway rolled over in a deep ditch.

According to Jasper County Sheriff John Halferty, a fire engine from the Grinnell Fire Department was also struck on the Interstate over the weekend. The Grinnell Fire Chief was not available for comment before presstime Monday.

No serious injuries were reported.
