PCM boys rout Saydel, edge South Hardin

DES MOINES — Senior Andrew Van Ryswyk led a balanced offensive attack, and PCM’s boys’ basketball team blew out Saydel on the road during a Heart of Iowa Conference play on Feb. 8.

The Mustangs led 25-12 after one quarter, outscored the Eagles 38-23 in the second half and defeated Saydel 76-48.

Van Ryswyk had 17 points and 11 rebounds, senior Reed Worth chipped in 14 points and three assists and senior Isaac Telfer added nine points and three assists.

Junior Derek Brown finished with nine points, four rebounds and four assists, junior Jason Stafford tallied eight points, six rebounds and four assists and sophomore Gatlin Boell collected eight points and six boards.

The Mustangs (12-7 overall, 10-3 in HOIC play) hit 14 3-pointers, led by four from Worth and three each from Van Ryswyk and Brown.

Saydel (5-15, 1-11) buried seven 3-pointers.

PCM, which has won three straight games, made up a HOIC game with Gilbert on Feb. 11. The Mustangs open Class 2A postseason play against either Chariton or Interstate 35 at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 14 in Van Meter.

PCM 50, South Hardin 44

MONROE — The Mustangs struggled from the floor during a non-conference home game with South Hardin on Feb. 9.

The game tipped off at 10 a.m., and both teams had trouble scoring at the offensive end, but the Mustangs rallied for a 50-44 home win.

PCM was 4-of-18 from 3-point range and 14-of-28 from the free-throw line but won the game after outscoring South Hardin (13-7) 24-14 in the second and third quarters.

The Mustangs trailed 15-11 after the first quarter.

Worth led the Mustangs with 14 points, seven steals, four rebounds and three assists. Telfer added 13 points, six rebounds and four assists.

Van Ryswyk battled foul trouble but still finished with nine points and six rebounds. Stafford tallied six points and six rebounds.
