City to apply for housing rehabilitation funding

The City of Colfax is preparing a grant application for a Community Development Block Grant from the State of Iowa. If approved, this would provide funding for a housing rehabilitation program with a target neighborhood. The proposed target neighborhood is located between North Elm Street and College Avenue, and Fry Street and East Division Street.

The grant money is used to hire contractors to assist qualified homeowners in making repairs and improvements to their homes. Typical repairs may include roofing, foundation repair, window repair and/or replacement, siding, electrical as well as heating and plumbing work.

Grants are very hard to get because there is a lot of competition among communities throughout the state. Only about 25 to 30 percent of those that apply will actually be awarded a grant.
