Ranked Montezuma sweeps Tigerhawks

MONTEZUMA — Montezuma’s ranked basketball teams were too much for Colfax-Mingo on Monday night during South Iowa Cedar League action.

The Class 1A second-ranked Braves started fast in the boys’ game and defeated the Tigerhawks 73-45. In the girls’ game. The 1A No. 3 Bravettes defeated Colfax-Mingo 72-31.

The Montezuma boys led 18-4. The lead was 17 at halftime, and the Tigerhawks got as close as 13 in the third.

Senior Zarek Hill and junior Brady Berkey both had 11 points for the Tigerhawks (4-12 overall, 4-9 in SICL play).

Leading the way for the Braves (15-0, 13-0) was sophomore Trey Shearer, who finished with 25 points, five rebounds and five assists.

In the girls’ game, Montezuma led 22-9 after one quarter and outscored the Tigerhawks (2-13, 2-11) 21-8 in the third. Riley Gatton had 19 points for Montezuma (15-1, 12-0) and Shateah Wetering chipped in 15 points.

C-M seniors Payton Rhone and Jordan Atwood each scored 11 to lead the Tigerhawks.

Colfax-Mingo plays Lynnville-Sully for a varsity girl-boy doubleheader starting at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Sully. The boys’ game is slated to tip off at 7:30 p.m.
