NEW SHARON — Lynnville-Sully’s basketball teams went on the road Monday in South Iowa Cedar League make-up games from Friday. The Hawk squads posted wins over the hosting North Mahaska Warhawks.

It was Class 1A fifth-ranked Lynnville-Sully against 10th-ranked North Mahaska in the girls’ contest. The Hawks used a strong second half to pull out a 62-58 victory.

Lynnville-Sully’s boys flipped the script against the Warhawk boys. The Hawks had a solid first half but the Warhawks forged a 49-all tie by the end of regulation.

The Hawk boys outscored the Warhawks 11-4 in overtime to claim a 60-53 win.

In the girls’ game, the Warhawks were up 25-19 at halftime.

“The first half was a little rough in terms of our execution on both ends of the floor,” Lynnville-Sully girls’ head coach Jerry Hulsing said. “I told the girls at half that we were lucky to be only down six. Fortunately, the things we needed to clean up were easy fixes. We needed better communication on screens and stopping cutters.”

Each team came out firing in the third quarter. Lynnville-Sully had a 20-19 scoring edge but still trailed 44-39.

The Hawk girls outscored the Warhawks 23-14 in the fourth quarter to snag the win. They shot 48 percent, 25-of-52, from the field and went 6-of-14 at the free-throw line.

“We needed to rebound the ball better. Offensively, we needed to move the ball quicker and look to find gaps to attack,” Hulsing said. “About mid third quarter it clicked in place, and we were really good for the rest of the game. Give the girls credit they kept battling and found a way to win.”

Mallory Loftus poured in 21 points to lead the Hawk girls. Carson Fisk added 20 points with five assists and three steals.

Krystal Van Dyke tossed in 10 points and had nine rebounds. Shiloh Cunningham scored five points while Janelle Rozendaal and Korinne Jansen each had three points.

North Mahaska finished with a 33-30 rebounding edge. It shot 43 percent, 24-of 55, from the field and downed 5-of-8 free throw attempts.

The Warhawk girls got 22 points and 13 rebounds from Kassidi Steel. Jade Hay scored 16 points.

Lynnville-Sully’s boys held a 17-15 lead after one quarter then used a 14-8 run to go up 31-23 by halftime.

The Hawks stayed in front, 39-30, through three quarters. The Warhawks went on a 19-10 scoring surge to knot things up at 49-all.

“The second half was a struggle for us, but the guys were able to step up and make a couple big plays when we had to have them,” Lynnville-Sully boys’ head coach Nick Harthoorn said. “We had a couple nice possessions in overtime that proved to be the difference.”

Rylan James led the Hawks with 21 points and nine rebounds. Tyson Vander Linden finished with 16 points, and six rebounds.

The Hawks shot 39 percent, 23-of-59, from the field. They sank 9-of-16 free throw tosses.

Blaize Kuhlmann, who was 4-of-6 at the line, had four points, four assists and five steals for Lynnville-Sully.

Zane Fraker added nine points and Kinnick McFarland had eight points. Gage Vander Leest had two points.

North Mahaska had three players scoring in double figures. Blake Readshaw had 14 points, Logan Shipley added 13 and Ty Kelderman finished with 10.

The Warhawks went 33 percent, 18-of-55, from the field. They cashed on 10-of-15 free throw attempts.
