C-M boys use big second quarter to down English Valleys

NORTH ENGLISH — Colfax-Mingo’s boys’ basketball team pulled away from English Valleys with a big second quarter on the road on Thursday night during a South Iowa Cedar League road game.

The Tigerhawks led 8-7 after one quarter but outscored the Bears 24-8 in the second and cruised to the 65-47 win. Colfax-Mingo held a one-point advantage over English Valleys in the second half.

Junior Brady Berkey scored 22 points and finished with five rebounds and six assists in the win, while senior Zarek Hill added 15 points and three steals. Berkey buried four 3-pointers.

Sophomore David Rague tallied eight points and five steals, sophomore Jacob Nichols had six points and five boards and sophomore Jordan Lundin finished with six points and three rebounds.

Colfax-Mingo (4-11 overall, 4-8 in the SICL) has won two of its last four games. English Valleys (2-12, 1-11) has lost eight straight games.

The Tigerhawks face Lynnville-Sully at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday in Sully. The girls’ game tips off at 6 p.m.

Colfax-Mingo 39

A slow start doomed the C-M girls on Thursday night. English Valleys led 22-10 at halftime and then used a 17-12 fourth quarter to put the Tigerhawks away during a 45-39 home win in SICL play.

Colfax-Mingo (2-12, 1-10) outscored English Valleys (4-10, 3-7) 17-6 in the third to get back in the game.

Senior Payton Rhone hit four 3-pointers and scored 21 points to lead the Tigerhawks.

Freshman Avery Rague scored six points, freshman Melanie Vry had four points and sophomore Brennan Rhone finished with three points.
