PCM girls lose to Fairfield, top-ranked North Polk

FAIRFIELD — A poor second quarter plagued PCM’s girls’ basketball team on Jan. 8 during a non-conference road game with Fairfield.

The Mustangs played almost even with the Trojans in three of the four quarters but were outscored 19-8 in the second and lost 62-49.

“We hit a scoring drought in the second quarter, and that helped them open it up a bit,” PCM coach Jeff Lindsay said. “We turned it over too much in that quarter, too. That’s not a good combination.”

Junior Regan Freland filled up the box score with 18 points, five rebounds, four steals, three assists and three blocks for the Mustangs (5-8). Sophomore Lilli Baird tallied 11 points, four rebounds and two assists.

Senior Mack Bussan grabbed seven rebounds, sophomore Celeste Wagaman pulled down four boards and senior Camryn Wignall dished out three assists.

“They are a good team,” Lindsay said. “We had two scoring droughts in the game and turned it over too much. We played a good game other than that. I like our offensive aggressiveness in the games since coming back from break.”

PCM had its two-game win streak snapped. Fairfield (7-4) has now won three of four and five of six.

The Trojans were led by Shaylin Drish’s 16 points. Destiny Gridley had 12 points and Ashely Bloomquist and Kara Jeffrey each finished with 10.

PCM’s games against at Pella were postponed on Jan. 12 due to weather. That non-conference game was made up on Jan. 14, and the Mustangs hosted Roland-Story on Jan. 15.

PCM returns to action against Saydel at 6 p.m. on Jan. 22 in Des Moines.

North Polk 63, PCM 22

MONROE — Class 3A No. 1 North Polk led 12-0 after one quarter and 32-11 at halftime before rolling to a 63-22 road victory over the PCM girls during HOIC action on Jan. 11.

Baird scored a team-high seven points, and Freland tallied six points, six rebounds, two assists, two steals and one block. Junior Sierra Foster had four rebounds.

North Polk won its 12th straight game and improved to 12-1 overall and 8-0 in conference play. PCM fell to 5-8 overall and 3-5 in conference play.
