OSKALOOSA — Taking it on the road for the first time this bowling season, Newton High’s Cardinal teams had solid outings in a quadrangular meet on Friday hosted by Oskaloosa at Mahaska Bowl.

The Cardinal girls won their division with a new season-high 2,500 pin score. They beat Sigourney, 2,185, Oskaloosa, 2,111, and Davis County, 1,956.

“The girls have had a goal this season to reach 2,500 pins in a single meet and they were able to accomplish that goal,” Newton head coach Christie Hughes said. “It was an emotional night for the boys as Devon Young completed his last game as a high school student, with a strike no less.”

Young, a senior, is graduating mid-term and has plans to enter the Army in the coming months, Hughes said. The Cardinal boys finished third with a 2,671 score on Friday. Host Oskaloosa took first with a 2,900 and Davis County was second at 2,782 and Sigourney finished fourth at 2,164.

Junior Carter VanderSchel fired a 410 series to lead the boys with games of 209 and 201. Cutter Benac, a senior, had a 295 (181-214), and junior Nate Keith had a 330 (160-170).

Young’s final high school series was a 310, fourth-best of the night for the Cardinals. He had games of 128 and 172. Junior Eli Ingle rolled a 309 (137-172) and junior Alex Frymoyer had a 299 (156-143).

“The boys rallied to make the night a memorable one for their team,” Hughes said.

Newton’s boys had Baker Games scores of 191, 194, 173, 149 and 210.

Newton’s girls had a 160-pin lead over Sigourney following the individual games, and led Oskloosa by 376 pins. The Cardinals put up a 762 score for the five Baker Games to hold their lead for the victory. They had game scores of 165, 150, 163, 171 and 113.

“They bowled solid series, averaging over 150 a game each and worked together to accomplish this goal,” Hughes said.

Senior Alicia Miller paced the Cardinals in the individual games with a 393 series rolling a 221 and 172. Sophomores Tanya Hernandez and Abby Price had scores of 355 (185-170) and 352 (186-166), respectively.

“I’m very proud of this group of bowlers,” Hughes said of the entire Newton bowling team. “They all have a strong bond and truly care for one another.”

The Cardinal teams take on Knoxville’s squads at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the Panthers’ home bowling center — Mustang Lanes in Monroe.
