Belle Plaine’s size too much for C-M girls

BELLE PLAINE — Belle Plaine’s size inside the paint was too much for Colfax-Mingo’s girls’ basketball team to overcome on Jan. 8 during a South Iowa Cedar League game.

Six-foot-2 post Kenzie Mantz scored 25 points, and Sam Ward and Dani Montgomery combined for 18 more as the Lady Plainsmen downed the Tigerhawks 54-41 at home.

“Mantz and Ward were too tough underneath tonight. They got a bunch of garbage buckets from missed outside shots,” Colfax-Mingo coach Jeff Clemens said. “We couldn’t match up.”

Belle Plaine (8-4 overall, 6-3 in conference play) led 18-8 after one quarter and coasted to the win. Colfax-Mingo was only outscored by three in the other three quarters.

Senior Jordan Atwood led the Tigerhawks (2-10, 1-8) with 10 points, three rebounds and three assists.

Senior Colbee Cunningham had eight points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals and senior Payton Rhone scored seven points.

Freshman Avery Rague and senior Camilla Schlosser both scored five points, senior Delaney Underwood tallied four and junior Abbey McConeghey chipped in two.

Schlosser added eight rebounds, and McConeghey pulled down three boards.

Colfax-Mingo has lost five straight games and nine of its last 10.

The Tigerhawks hosted HLV on Jan. 15. They play English Valleys at 6 p.m. on Jan. 17 in North English and Montezuma at 6 p.m. on Jan. 18 in Montezuma.
