Newton Police Department

• James A. Garland, 38, of Newton, was charged with domestic abuse at 9:13 p.m. Saturday. According to Newton Police, officers were sent to the 600 block of East 19th Street North for a domestic fight. Officers spoke to three witnesses upon arrival, all saying Garland allegedly pulled the victim down the stairs and subsequently fought with them, causing bodily injuries to the victim. Garland was arrested and transported to Jasper County Jail.

• Teri M. Wise, 37, of Newton, was charged with fifth-degree theft at 8:43 p.m. Monday. According to Newton Police, officers were sent to Hy-Vee for a potential shoplifter. Officers spoke to an employee who mentioned Wise allegedly concealed store property inside her sweatshirt pocket. Wise admitted to the shoplifting of the items, totaling $4.89. Wise received a citation, summoning her to appear in court.
