Newton City Council votes down fireworks ban

Chapé, George flip in final consideration

Fireworks use within city limits will remain legal following the Newton City Council's decision Monday night to strike down a proposed ban.

After a month-long debate between city officials and the general public both in and outside city hall, city council members voted 4-2 to oppose the third and final consideration of an ordinance that would have amended the city fireworks code, banning the use of the celebratory pyrotechnics within city limits.

Council members Mark Hallam and Craig Trotter maintained their opposition through all three readings; likewise, two of their city government peers, Steve Mullan and Dean Stonner, asserted their support for the ban during the last three council meetings.

After nine citizens shared their thoughts and concerns during the Monday night meeting – most of whom were opposed to the fireworks ban – council members Lin Chapé and Evelyn George decided to switch their votes, voicing their willingness to find some sort of compromise.

Previously, council voted 4-2 in favor of the ban during the first and second consideration of the ordinance.

City officials argued the fireworks ban was necessary to "in order to enhance the health and safety of residents, reduce incidents of property damage and to mitigate noise issues."
