PCM basketball splits with HOIC rival Nevada

NEVADA — Prairie City-Monroe’s boys’ basketball team has a winning streak for the first time this season after cruising past Nevada 75-54 on Friday night during Heart of Iowa Conference play.

PCM (5-2 overall, 4-1 in conference play) is tied with Class 2A No. 5 South Hamilton for second in the HOIC after Gilbert handed the Hawks their first conference loss in 34 games on Friday.

PCM has won three straight games after defeating Knoxville on Saturday.

Four players scored in double-figures against Nevada, led by senior Reed Worth with 23 points.

Senior Andrew Van Ryswyk had 14 points and 12 rebounds, junior Derek Brown tallied 14 points and six boards and junior Jason Stafford added 12 points, five rebounds and five assists.

Senior Isaac Telfer chipped in seven points and 12 rebounds. Worth delivered six assists.

The Mustangs led the Cubs (3-4, 1-4) 25-14 after one, 40-23 at halftime and 59-34 after three quarters.

PCM had a 16-point advantage at the free-throw line and out-rebounded the Cubs 38-20.

The Mustangs play Roland-Story for a girl-boy varsity doubleheader starting with the girls’ game at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.

The boys game is scheduled to tip off at 7:30 p.m.

GIRLS

Nevada 41, PCM 29

NEVADA — An ice-cold shooting night plagued the PCM girls on Friday night.

Junior Regan Freland had 15 points, seven rebounds, two assists, three steals and one blocked shot, but the Mustangs struggled offensively during a 41-29 loss to Nevada during HOIC action.

The Mustangs (3-5, 2-3)trailed 9-2 after one quarter and 19-9 at halftime before scoring 20 points in the second half.

“Our defense played well and kept us in the game,” PCM coach Jeff Lindsay said. “Our shooting was ice cold. We have to be able to make adjustments to the gyms we play in.”

Senior Mack Bussan tallied a career-high nine points and grabbed seven rebounds, and sophomore Emma George finished with five rebounds and four steals.

Kacie Rewerts led Nevada (3-7 overall, 3-2 in conference play) with 16 points and nine rebounds.
