C-M girls snap skid with win over Saydel

COLFAX — Senior Jordan Atwood recorded her first double-double of the season, four Colfax-Mingo players scored in double figures and the Tigerhawk girls’ basketball team snapped a four-game losing streak with a 57-38 win over Saydel on Thursday night.

The Tigerhawks jumped out to an early lead, held the Eagles to two points in the third quarter and Colfax-Mingo improved to 2-5 on the season.

Atwood finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Tigerhawks, while senior Payton Rhone tallied a team-high 12 points and four rebounds and seniors Camilla Schlosser and Delaney Underwood chipped in 11 and 10 points, respectively.

“The girls played as a team and the points were distributed all over,” Colfax-Mingo coach Jeff Clemens said. “Payton’s floor game opened up the offense as Saydel moved to a box-in-one.”

Atwood added three steals and Underwood, senior Colbee Cunningham and sophomore Brennan Rhone each had two steals. The Tigerhawks finished with 10 steals in the win.

“Jordan Atwood is coming into her own. Her floor play and leadership elevated the team,” Clemens said. “

Cunningham scored four points, grabbed nine boards, dished out six assists and blocked two shots, Brennan Rhone scored eight points and dished out three assists and Underwood chipped in three assists.

The Tigerhawks grabbed 40 rebounds in the win, including four from freshman Melany Vry and three apiece from freshman Avery Rague and Schlosser.

Colfax-Mingo led 14-5 after one quarter and went into the locker room at halftime with a 29-14 advantage.

The Tigerhawks won the third quarter 14-2 and was outscored by the Eagles (0-7) 22-14 in the fourth.

“All in all the kids were ready to play,” Clemens said. “I observed a number of good things we are improving on, and I knew with a new system that our offense was going to take some time to jump start. We need to do a better job on defense but we are slowly getting there.”
