Newton Police Department

• Melissa A. Morris, 53, of Newton, was charged with possession of a controlled substance at 11:45 a.m. Sunday. According to Newton police, an officer was investigating a theft case at Love’s Travel Center. Morris gave the officer permission to search her purse for stolen merchandise and a small blue Tupperware container was found. Inside the container appeared to be 0.3 grams of marijuana. Morris received a citation and was summoned to appear in court.

• Kristin E. Mitchell, 46, of Newton, was charged with interference with official acts at 9:26 p.m. and assault on persons in certain occupations at 9:37 p.m. Monday. According to Newton police, officers were sent to the 900 block of East Seventh Street North for a possible physical altercation. Upon arrival, officers found Mitchell passed out and appeared to have hit her head on the concrete. Witnesses told officers Mitchell was allegedly causing trouble in the area. After being transported to Skiff Medical Center by ambulance, Mitchell was allegedly yelling at doctors and causing disruptions after being treated for her injuries. Officers were called to Skiff, then gave Mitchell a ride back to the original residence where she saw the witness she originally had the altercation with and charged at him. Officers told Mitchell to step back several times, and Mitchell refused each time. Mitchell was arrested and transported to Jasper County Jail.
