Genetic testing offered at medical clinic in Prairie City

Pella Regional’s Medical Clinic in Prairie City is now one of only a few locations in Iowa offering genetic testing to patients. Genetic testing is a medical test that identifies changes in chromosomes, genes or proteins. The results of a genetic test can confirm or rule out a suspected genetic condition or help determine a person’s chance of developing or passing on a genetic disorder.

Patients can now schedule an office visit with their primary care provider at Pella Regional’s Medical Clinic in Prairie City instead of traveling outside of the area to get this testing done. The provider determines the need for genetic testing by going through a screening questionnaire as there are certain criteria that put patients more at risk for carrying a cancer gene.

The testing involves a lab draw and a phone call with a genetic counselor. Insurance usually covers the cost of the testing. If the lab test comes back positive a follow-up visit is necessary to determine next steps.

“Many patients come in requesting genetic testing because a loved one had some form of cancer, whether it’s breast, ovarian, gastric, pancreatic, colon,” Lisa Fiorentin, manager of the clinic said. “Genetic testing has potential benefits whether the results are positive or negative. The testing can provide a sense of relief from uncertainty and help people make informed decisions about managing their health care.”
