Mustangs suffer road sweep to Gilbert

GILBERT — Senior Reed Worth scored 28 points, but Prairie City-Monroe’s boys’ basketball team couldn’t keep up with host Gilbert during a 70-59 road loss on Friday during Heart of Iowa Conference play.

The difference in the game was the second quarter. The Mustangs were outscored 21-10 in the second by the Tigers. The two teams played to an even score the other three quarters.

The Mustangs also got 10 points and 14 rebounds from senior Andrew Van Ryswyk, seven points, three rebounds and four assists from junior Derek Brown and six points, four rebounds, five assists and two steals from junior Jason Stafford.

Senior Isaac Telfer chipped in eight points, seven rebounds and three assists before fouling out. Worth also had six boards and three steals.

PCM had 15 assists on its 20 made field goals, but the team was only 6-of-22 from 3-point range.

Gilbert had a 15-0 advantage in bench points. The Tiger reserves also had 13 rebounds, two assists and two steals in the win.

Gilbert led 14-13 after one quarter, but the Tigers made three of the first four buckets in the second quarter and ended the first half on a 12-4 run to lead 35-23 at halftime.

PCM (2-2 overall, 1-1 in the HOIC) used a 9-0 run to start the third quarter, and the Mustangs got within three in the third before Gilbert’s Matthew Ockey scored seven points in 35 seconds to extend the Tigers’ cushion.

Gilbert (4-0, 3-0) led by as many as 14 points in the fourth quarter. PCM got the deficit to seven with 1:05 left, but the Tigers hit five free throws in the final 20 seconds to finish off the victory.

GIRLS

Gilbert 56, PCM 22

GILBERT — Junior Regan Freland finished with nine points, five rebounds, three assists and one block, but the PCM girls’ basketball team lost to host Gilbert 56-22 in HOIC play on Friday night.

The Tigers led 14-10 after one quarter but held the Mustangs (2-4, 1-2) to two points in the second quarter. Gilbert scored the first 13 points of the third quarter and outscored PCM 26-10 in the second half.

Senior Mack Bussan scored six points and grabbed two rebounds and senior Camryn Wignall added five rebounds and two assists for PCM, which has lost three in a row. Sophomore Emma George also had four rebounds and two assists.

The Mustangs made 8-of-35 from the floor, including 2-of-16 from 3-point range.

Gilbert (3-3, 2-1) starts three sophomores and a freshman. Freshman Ava Hawthorne led the Tigers with 19 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals. Sophomore Emma Bullman had nine points and 10 rebounds.

After three straight road games, the Mustangs return home for a girl-boy varsity doubleheader against Greene County starting at 6 p.m. on Tuesday in Monroe. The boys game is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.
