PCM boys blow by North Polk, fall to Gilbert in HOIC play

ALLEMAN — A fast start helped PCM’s boys’ basketball team grab an early lead against North Polk and a strong finish pushed the Mustangs to a 78-52 road victory during Heart of Iowa Conference action on Dec. 4.

Senior Reed Worth scored 26 points and grabbed six rebounds and senior Andrew Van Ryswyk tallied another double-double with 23 points and 10 boards as the Mustangs outscored North Polk 21-10 in the first and 20-8 in the fourth.

Junior Jason Stafford tallied 12 points, five rebounds and nine assists in the win.

Senior Isaac Telfer scored seven points and had five boards, and junior Derek Brown grabbed three rebounds and dished out four assists.

PCM (2-2 overall, 2-1 in conference games) had an 11-point advantage from the free-throw line, making 15-of-21.

North Polk (0-3, 0-2) was 4-of-12 from the charity stripe.

PCM hosted Greene County on Dec. 11.

The Mustangs play at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 14 in Nevada and then host Knoxville at 6 p.m. on Dec. 15.

Gilbert 70, PCM 59

GILBERT — Worth scored 28 points, but PCM couldn’t keep up with host Gilbert during a 70-59 loss on Dec. 7.

Gilbert led 14-13 after one quarter, but the Tigers made three of the first four buckets in the second quarter and ended the first half on a 12-4 run to lead 35-23 at halftime.

PCM used a 9-0 run to start the third quarter, and the Mustangs got within three in the third quarter before Gilbert’s Matthew Ockey scored seven points in 35 seconds to extend the Tigers’ cushion.

Gilbert led by as many as 14 points in the fourth quarter. PCM got the deficit to seven with 1:05 left, but the Tigers hit five free throws in the final 20 seconds to finish off the victory.

The Mustangs also got 10 points and 14 rebounds from Van Ryswyk, seven points, three rebounds and four assists from Brown and six points, four rebounds, five assists and two steals from Stafford in the loss.

Telfer chipped in eight points, seven rebounds and three assists before fouling out. Worth also had six boards and three steals.

PCM had 15 assists on its 20 made field goals, but the team was only 6-of-22 from 3-point range.

Gilbert had a 15-0 advantage in bench points. The Tiger reserves also had 13 rebounds, two assists and two steals in the win.

Pella Christian 83,

PCM 52

PELLA — A slow start plagued PCM against Pella Christian on Dec. 3. The Mustangs trailed 22-11 after one quarter and played catch up from there during an 83-52 road loss.

The Mustangs trailed 44-27 at halftime and were outscored 23-12 in the third.

Worth tallied 21 points to lead the PCM, while Van Ryswyk had 16 points and seven rebounds. Telfer finished with three points, four rebounds and three assists, and Brown added four points and five rebounds.
