According to Newton police, an officer was sent to the 1700 block of South Eighth Avenue East on a call of a theft of services. The officer spoke with a cab driver from Des Moines, who said Salemink allegedly ran away from the cab after being dropped off without paying the $84 fine. Salemink was arrested on a charge of public intoxication 30 minutes later at Forest View Apartments, and was transported to the Jasper County Jail.

• Cody M. Howard, 20, of Omaha, was charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia at 8:08 p.m. Nov. 24. According to Newton police, officers saw a silver Kia Forte with no headlights or taillights heading northbound on First Street South. The vehicle, driven by Howard, was pulled over and officers detected a marijuana-like odor. Howard declined the officer’s request to search his vehicle but showed him the pipe he had. The officer had Howard step outside the vehicle, arrested him and transported him to the Jasper County Jail.

• Derek S. Rice, 30, of Newton, was charged with third-degree burglary at 1:35 a.m. Nov. 22. According to Newton police, officers were sent to the 800 block of East 10th Street North on a call of a burglary in progress. Officers found Rice nearby and conducted a traffic stop on Rice, where officers saw multiple open containers of alcohol inside. Rice also had a strong odor of alcohol coming from him. He was arrested and transported to the Jasper County Jail.
