Santa Claus is coming to breakfast

Three years ago, board members of Colfax Community Preschool hosted a breakfast with Santa Claus partly as a fundraiser but primarily to encourage preschool families to interact outside school hours. What began as a one-time event has become a yearly tradition.

“It was such a big hit,” Tawnya Vry, 13-year director of Colfax Community Preschool, said. “When parents showed up at the event, they told us how excited their kids were, and they wanted to come back next year.”

The second year of breakfast with Santa, attendance grew to 160 people. Vry and the preschool board have planned for even greater numbers at this year’s breakfast, which will be from 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Colfax-Mingo Elementary School. Attendance is free, but supporters of the school can make a donation at the door.

Board members have collaborated with local grocery stores to secure supplies to concoct a breakfast of pancakes, eggs and sausage. Colfax-Mingo High School students will assist the eight board members in serving the meal to earn community service hours.

Children will have the opportunity to color, glue and collage with Vry in the craft area outside of the elementary school’s cafeteria. In case consuming syrupy pancakes doesn’t provide enough of a sugar high for one day, children can peruse cookies, brownies and cakes at a free-will donation bake sale.

“It’s great to interact with the kids outside of the classroom and get to know them better in a more relaxed environment,” Vry said.

Theresa Faidley, a photographer and member of the preschool board, will take pictures of children with Santa for $5.

“We are just very thankful for the elementary school’s support of this event and for everybody who comes to the event,” said Vry. “It will help support the preschool and its programs.”
